Understanding the weather is essential for safe and enjoyable flying in Central Utah. Here are a few resources and tips to help you plan your flights effectively.
- NWS Discussion: The best place to start is by reading the National Weather Service Forecast Discussion. This gives an overall picture of the expected weather patterns and systems affecting the region.
- Windy.com and Windy App: Windy.com and the Windy app are great tools to visualize upcoming weather. Use filters to view:
- Thunderstorm risk
- Cloud cover
- Winds at multiple altitudes
- Temperature, pressure, and precipitation
- 12-day general trends and timing of improving conditions
- HRRR Model Forecasts: For day-of and next-day accuracy, we rely on the HRRR (High-Resolution Rapid Refresh) model for its precision in forecasting:
- Wind speed and direction
- Cloud cover and base height
- Overdevelopment potential
- Gust front arrival and strength
- XC Skies: XC Skies is used heavily by local pilots. Key tools include:
- Surface Gust filter: shows hour-by-hour gust front propagation
- PointCast: visualize trends in wind, thermal height, and temperature at specific elevations (launch, valley floor, mountain tops)
- Useful filters include XC Potential, Cloud Base, Precipitation, Conservative Lift Height, and more
- Use hourly forecasts and map overlays to assess the flying window and spot potential hazards
- Real-Time Wind Readings: View Live wind data from weather stations located at Monroe launch, Cove launch, and the main landing zone.
- Central Utah NOAA Reports: Central Utah NOAA provides updated wind conditions and weather hazard alerts.
- General Weather Outlook: Weather.com gives a broad 10-day outlook to support long-term planning.
What Makes for Good Flying Weather?
Ideal conditions include manageable wind speeds, high conservative lift heights, and no overdevelopment. A stable trend toward mellowing conditions as the sun lowers is typically favorable for evening glass-offs.
